Folksinger and activist Woody Guthrie composed 26 songs in 30 days riding along the Columbia River and touring the Grand Coulee Dam project of the Bonneville Power Authority in 1941. He then went on to enlist in the U.S. Merchant Marine in WWII and take three voyages across the Atlantic, losing two ships to U-boat torpedoes, playing for frightened troops during typhoons, and delivering soldiers to the shores of Normandy in the summer of 1944. He returned home to fame and notoriety, but also to tragedy and tremendous personal loss.
Historian, teacher, folksinger, and actor Joel Underwood performs an hour that is not solely a concert, theatrical drama, or academic lecture, but has elements of all three. During “That Ribbon of Highway”, audiences can sing along to favorites such as “Roll on Columbia”, “Pastures of Plenty”, and of course “This Land is Your Land”, but they will also learn the stories behind the songs, sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic, but always engaging.

Musician/historian/storyteller Joel Underwood returns to KCPT with his triptych of performances that walk the audience through a gallery of American popular music in the twentieth century. Underwood's revamped Woody Guthrie, his Hank Williams, and newly-added Buddy Holly evenings provide classic songs like "This Land Is Your Land", "Your Cheatin' Heart", and "That'll Be The Day" to sing along with, as well as the often tragic stories behind them. In addition, they examine the high price of musical genius and the toll it can take on the artist and loved ones in their orbit.

Most importantly, this evening is an opportunity for our community to surround Kat with love and support as she begins the difficult journey of rebuilding after this devastating loss.

3 Playwrights face the impossible mission of penning a play to submit to the audience. Live writing to audience prompts will result in 3 short plays, one of which will be performed by actors waiting in the wings. See the craft of theatre unfold right before your eyes and play a part in the development of the next great play by local playwrights.
