Key City Public Theatre | Port Townsend's Community Theatre

For Playwrights

Key City Public Theatre provides several programs for local playwrights, including Playwrights Works-in-Progress, a monthly opportunity for writers to hear their working scripts read and receive feedback.

In collaboration with the PT Arts Commission, a nationally recognized playwright conducts a free playwrights workshop in Port Townsend annually.  This event is part of our KCPT Playwrights Festival.

Also, the PT Arts Commission sponsors an annual One Act Play Competition for playwrights in Jefferson County.

Submission Guidelines

Key City Public Theatre has an ongoing commitment to new work. New plays by Constance Congdon, Wendy MacLeod, and Gip Hoppe have been produced in our last four mainstage seasons, and our current mainstage season features the West Coast premieres of new plays by Gip Hoppe and Joanne Schmoll.

You may submit a play through your literary agent or accompanied by a letter of recommendation from an artistic director or literary manager at a professional theater. Please include playwright resume.

If neither of these apply to you, we are happy to accept a submission query. It should include:

  • Synopsis
  • Character Breakdown (please note any double casting)
  • Technical requirements
  • Ten page script sample
  • Script history
  • Playwright resume

2011 Playwrights' Festival guidelines

KCPT's annual Port Townsend Playwrights Festival each February features productions of one act plays by local, Jefferson County playwrights and workshops of new full length plays by regional playwrights based in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia, most recently TALES OF DOOMED LOVE by Portland playwright Andrea Stolowitz.

For 2011, KCPT's Playwrights Festival will feature week-long workshops/staged readings of two new plays.

If you're submitting a new play for the playwrights festival, please include:

  • Synopsis
  • Character Breakdown (please note any double casting)
  • Ten page script sample
  • Playwright resume
  • One page maximum statement of what you'd like to accomplish in a week-long workshop.

Deadline for 2011 Playwrights' Festival submissions is June 30, 2010.
