PT Shorts presents three short comedies

Three witty comedies are featured at the next PT Shorts program on Saturday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m. Key City Playhouse, 419 Washington Street in Port Townsend.

The free hour-long program, entitled “All in the Timing: Two love stories and one very strange death” features short pieces by humorists P.G. Wodehouse and David Ives.

Kate Schumann first reads Wodehouse’s story “Sundered Hearts,” an eccentric love story in which mistaken identity and the game of golf play a critical role.

Then Ian Keith and Deborah Hammond read two comic one-acts from the collection “All in the Timing” by playwright David Ives — “Sure Thing” and “Variations on the Death of Trotsky.”

“Sure Thing” is a chronicle of the possibilities that exist when two people try to have a cup of coffee together. It starts with the question “Is that seat taken?” and then traces the many possible answers to that simple question, along with the resulting outcomes.

“Variations on the Death of Trotsky” was written when Ives learned of the bizarre nature of Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky’s death. “I was taken with the thought of what one does for thirty-six hours with a mountain-climber’s axe stuck in one’s head,” commented the author.

Kate Schumann has read several times at PT Shorts, including this year’s “First Night” celebration, and for “The Hungry Ocean” program in March.

Ian Keith has appeared twice at the Key City Playhouse this year, as a comic book writer in “Belief” for the Playwrights’ Festival, and as the Doctor in “The Seagull.”

Deb Hammond most recently read for the PT Shorts programs “Radio Plays” in February and “Writers Touched With Fire” last fall.

This month, PT Shorts is being held at Key City Playhouse at 419 Washington Street in Port Townsend, which is wheelchair-accessible.

Port Townsend (PT) Shorts is a monthly series of literary readings produced by Key City Public Theatre and sponsored by the Port Townsend Arts Commission. You can catch PT Shorts during Gallery Walk on the first Saturday of every month.
