About Theater Education at KCPT

Below is an outline illustrating a path for your student - where it begins and where it ultimately can lead.

After school sessions in Fall, Winter, and Spring are designed to guide each student as they progress through our program. For beginner students, Theatre Adventure Club and Drama I provide an introduction into the ‘art of play’ where students learn to work creatively with their peers. Intermediate students advance to Drama II and are introduced to more specific skill building in areas of improvisation, character work, movement, and voice. Drama II students apply these skills and rehearse with scene partners, memorize scripts, and present a showcase on the last day of class. Drama III, is an advanced class that is offered to returning students who qualify.  This specialized class provides a rotating curriculum that is designed to change seasonally based upon current students’ ability and interest.

In the summer, we offer week long camps for ages 5-7, 8-11, and 12-15.  These day camps provide an immersive experience for students of all levels to deepen and expand skills taught throughout the year. Each camp results in a showcase for friends and family to highlight their experience during the immersive week.

Want to see your student in a full performance? We end each year with KCPT’s Youth Performance Intensive.  The culmination of our year round education programs, the intensive provides an opportunity for students who are excelling within our classes. During this week, qualifying students who are invited to participate will be cast in a production, engage in a full rehearsal process, and perform their show in a live public performance.

As your student grows in our programs and becomes of age, they will be invited to participate in our yearly Teen Initiative, where teens produce and perform a full-length play under the mentorship of KCPT's artists.

In addition, opportunities to be a part of The Theater's close-knit community as a volunteer, mentee, and intern are all ways your student can grow at Key City Public Theatre.

Our programs aim to:

  • Empower today's youth
  • Explore the creative process
  • Build acting skills and increase confidence
  • Investigate story and character
  • Inspire engaged and informed members of society

In addition, we have programs well suited for private groups and public/private k-12 on-site settings, with the ability to customize our workshops to match specific curriculum.
